Aged Care Lifestyle Programs
How lifestyle programs enhance quality of life in aged care
As our loved ones age and move into residential aged care, maintaining their quality of life becomes paramount. And one of the best ways to not only maintain but enhance their wellbeing in aged care facilities is to establish enriching and purposeful aged care lifestyle programs. Here’s why.
Wellbeing is about more than just physical health – maintaining a sense of purpose and social connection is essential for our quality of life, especially as we age. Though some may see aged care lifestyle programs merely as a source of entertainment, we see them as a vital way to bolster the physical, emotional, mental and social health of our residents.
Here are just some of the ways our lifestyle programs enhance quality of life in residential aged care…
They promote movement and exercise
One of the most significant benefits of a well-designed lifestyle program is the positive impact on residents’ health and wellbeing. Engaging in gentle exercise, a key component of many activities for aged care, helps maintain physical health, mobility, and independence.
Physical activity is an effective way to reduce the risk of falls and other health complications. From chair yoga to throwing and catching exercises, our lifestyle programs provide many opportunities for our residents to improve their physical health. Even better, the social interaction inherent in group activities combats isolation and loneliness, significantly improving mental health outcomes.
They can be personalised
A critical factor in effective aged care lifestyle programs is personalisation. Each of our residents are individuals with their own unique interests, needs, and memories. We like to tailor our programs accordingly. Research shows that reminiscing specifically allows aged care residents to recall cherished memories to help counter feelings of loneliness or depression by bringing emotional comfort and a sense of fulfillment. Residents are able to reflect on their positive life experiences to evoke feelings of joy, happiness and satisfaction. Engaging in these types of aged care activities can also improve our residents’ recall abilities, strengthen their communication skills and keep the mind active – all working to enhance our residents’ quality of life.
This was definitely the case recently at Palm Lake Care Bargara. Our Lifestyle Team organised for two local car clubs – the Early Holden Car Club and the Bundaberg Vintage Vehicle Club – to visit, which had our eager residents excitedly reminiscing about all the vehicles they have owned over the years. One resident, Neil, was ecstatic to discover an almost identical version of a car he once owned – right down to the colour! Some Palm Lake Care Bargara team members got dressed up in 1950s-style outfits to bring even more memories of the era to our grateful residents.
They offer autonomy
Choice and flexibility are essential elements of a successful lifestyle program. Offering a variety of activities allows residents to choose those that resonate with them, fostering a sense of autonomy and control. This can range from individual pursuits like reading or puzzles to group activities like bingo (a favourite among our residents) or exercise classes.
Aged care activities should also be adaptable and accommodate for changes in a resident’s physical or cognitive abilities. We provide modifications and support to ensure continued participation and enjoyment.
They create community
Lifestyle programs play a vital role in keeping residents connected with community, both within and outside aged care facilities. Outings to local events, visits from community groups, and volunteer opportunities provide a sense of belonging and purpose, combating feelings of isolation that can arise with age. These connections help residents maintain their identity and feel like valued members of society.
Because we know that the success of a lifestyle program hinges on regular feedback and evaluation, we actively seek input from residents, family members and staff. This way, we can ensure our aged care lifestyle programs are meeting needs and preferences, remaining dynamic and responsive, and continually adapting to enhance the quality of life for all residents.
